City Schools, Summer 2009

  • A group of Crown Heights high school students is trying to change their community this summer—by creating a 14 by 100 foot mural near Brower Park.

The students have been working with professional artists through the Groundswell Community Mural Project to send a powerful message to passersby: local teens won’t tolerate gun violence.

  • This summer, 10-year-old Nick Ward of Brooklyn has attended karate camp and learned to play drums and guitar. But the summer hasn’t been 100% “fun” for Nick, who is preparing to start middle school in September.

Nick’s middle school sent home a summer reading list and his parents are making sure he’s prepared to go back to school after Labor Day.

  • Joel Rose is the DOE’s Chief Executive for Human Capital. He just completed a six-week pilot program at M.S. 131 in Chinatown. During the pilot, called “School of One,” classrooms were organized using new high-tech methods to maximize student learning and better prepare students for 21st century jobs.
