Overview
View a video summary of the Fordham PSO.
Through reflection, self-analysis, and the integration of perspectives gained from research and data, each Fordham Partnership Support Organization school moves toward the “tipping point” at which its culture ceases to be a “a culture of excuses” and becomes one of accountability and accomplishment.
Fordham’s support vision is founded on the diagnostic prescriptive approach that is implicit in the Children First initiative. This approach uses data to assess present status, set goals, and develop a plan to meet those goals. As the plan is implemented, an ongoing stream of new data is collected and monitored, allowing the school to measure progress and adjust course as needed.
The diagnostic prescriptive approach is an effective tool for increasing student performance. It enables school leaders to examine all the aspects of the school culture and operations that impact achievement on a school-wide level. In the classroom, it is a practice that enables teachers to closely monitor the extent to which instructional strategies result in individual student progress, and to select effective interventions for each student.
How We Support Schools
Fordham University, through the Center for Educational Partnerships, is proud to be one of only two institutions of higher education selected by the New York City Department of Education to serve as a Partnership Support Organization (PSO). Indeed, the Center for Educational Partnerships stands alone as the only university-based PSO providing services across the entire K-12 spectrum.
Fordham provides a broad range of services to its partner schools. These services, which are customized for each school, include helping schools identify best practices, targeting and developing strategies to support specific students in need of interventions, and analyzing school needs to ensure effective prioritization to determine the best use of time and resources. Fordham PSO also assists its schools with expanding the Inquiry Process and provides assistance with the use of and implementation of all DOE Accountability Tools.
The Fordham PSO uses a diagnostic-prescriptive approach that is grounded in a medical model, to identify and address areas in which a school needs support. Our team of associates conducts a thorough study of each school’s data and joins the principal and faculty in walk-throughs of the building to identify the school’s unique strengths and areas for growth. Goals for progress are established, and a menu of recommended services is created to support the school as it strives to improve student outcomes by building the capacity of its faculty.
Additionally, Fordham provides support in the areas of operations and compliance. We provide student teachers for our schools along with access to Fordham graduate career fairs, tuition reduction for administrators and teachers in PSO schools. We invite our school leaders to attend Fordham sponsored conferences and special events, campus tours, financial aid workshops, graduation facilities for middle school and high school, and under the leadership of Dr. Anita Batisti, grant writing workshops that to date have yielded $750,000 of additional support for our schools.
The schools in the Fordham network are supported instructionally and operationally by a full time core team housed at the Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, augmented by curriculum area specialists, consultants, professors, and educators from Fordham University Centers. Drawing on the Graduate School of Education faculty and centers, affiliations and partners the team provides tailor-made action plans and interventions for elementary, middle, and high schools in four boroughs.
All Fordham schools are supported by the PSO Dedicated Service Center which is an innovative pilot program designed to align and maximize support services to schools based on their individual PSO models.
The Dedicated Service Team at the ISC is an innovative pilot program designed to align and maximize support services to participating PSO schools based on their individual PSO models. The Dedicated Service Team at the ISC will provide participating PSO schools with the range of expertise available through the ISCs with high level customized service and school accountability. Under this pilot program, all schools in a PSO network affiliated with Replications, CUNY, Fordham and AED will be served by a single dedicated ISC team, consisting of budget, human resources, payroll and applications support. Other ISC services such as Special Education and Youth Development will work in close partnership with the members of the Dedicated Service Team and the PSO staff to maximize support for schools.

Goal Setting
Best Fit
The mission of the Fordham PSO collaboration with New York City public schools is to help teachers and administrators drive academic achievement through a process of reflection, self-analysis and the integration of perspectives gained from research into school-wide and classroom practices. The Fordham PSO has worked with elementary, middle, and high schools, customizing the work to the specific needs of each site. Understanding the multitude of approaches to teaching and learning, and respecting the uniqueness of every building, our team strives to develop an open, trusting and collegial relationship with all school constituents--administrators, staff, students, and parents alike. Using a critical friends approach, we encourage members of each school community to join us in evaluating their existing model. By synthesizing views provided from multiple perspectives, using careful data analysis along with information culled from various reports and resources, classroom visits, exploration of options and professional development, PSO services, supports and interventions are tailored to the goals set by each school community.
Our successful schools share “an out of the box” philosophy. Their desire is for a unique customized approach and plan as evidence by the following feedback from our principals.
Feedback from Principals
“It’s good to have a team that supports and is always there when you have celebrations as well as when you have conflicts. Have you seen the Verizon commercials where the whole team follows the customer? That is how we feel.” Fausto Salazar, Principal - New World High School
"What I was looking for in Fordham’s PSO is an organization that can ‘Think out of the Box’… has roots in education, and trains new teachers to be part of the new workforce in education.” Pedro Santana, Principal – M.S. 391
“My Fordham Partnership Organization has provided me with customized support to address the needs of my learning community. Through our partnership, 45 of my students and their families participated in technology training at the Rose Hill Campus. At the conclusion all of the students walked away with a free Dell desktop computer.” Delise Jones, Principal-M.S. 117 X
“ The Fordham PSO has worked with PS209 to address the needs of the school especially in these dire economic times. To date we have secured $167,000 in grants with the help of the Fordham PSO.” Mary McDonnell Ed.D. Principal - P.S. 209Q
“Fordham has a reputation for excellence... they are able to impart realistic and practical knowledge.” Delois White, Principal-P.S. 4 M
“From the first moment when I attended the presentation I knew that Fordham was for us and we were for Fordham, it was a great fit. I wanted people who are friendly; I wanted people who are open; I wanted people who are positive; people who come to help, not judge and evaluate.” Gary Cruz, Principal-P.S. 325 M
“The Fordham Partnership Organization is very responsive to my school community’s needs. Our teachers have received invaluable professional development in all core curriculum areas and data analysis. I speak for my entire school community in expressing a great sense of satisfaction with our School Support Organization choice!” Cheryl McClendon, Principal-P.S. 175 M
“I had a vision that if I align myself with a university, my school would become a school where future teachers would come and student teach, a place where visitors would come and see good education.” Nancy Colon, Principal-P.S. 397K
“Having Fordham has been a wonderful experience for our teachers and students. Teachers have received customized high quality professional development focusing on a diagnostic prescriptive approach. Through Fordham our school received a grant to install Smart Boards’ in every classroom; as well as 45 lap tops for students to take home.” Maria Lopez, Principal -I.S. 318 X
