Gifted & Talented Assessment Program Update

Families who are new residents of New York City can request testing in Summer 2008 for placement into an entry grade K or 1 Elementary Gifted & Talented Program for the 2008-2009 school year. Please note families must be able to prove that their residency was established after the request for testing period closed this year, specifically after January 3, 2008.

Gifted and Talented placement letters were sent on Friday, June 13. Families will begin receiving letters this weekend. The deadline to accept or decline a placement offer is Friday, June 20.

For district programs, the DOE has established eligibility criteria at or above the 90th percentile* on national norms using a combined score of two assessments – The Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA). For citywide programs, eligibility criteria are at or above the 97th percentile.

*Note: On April 10, 2008, the Panel for Educational Policy approved the Chancellor’s recommendation to change eligibility criteria to at or above the 90th percentile for district Gifted & Talented programs.

Written requests for reviews must be received by May 15th, 2008. Requests should be submitted to:
