The DOE offers several assessment options for English and math in all grades; schools choose the combination of the Periodic Assessments described below that meet their needs. School can also design their own assessments to use alone or in combination with these other options. Predictive Assessments (Acuity) are like short versions of New York State Tests. They give an early prediction of students' likely performance level so that students and teachers know how much work they need to do, and where to focus their effort, to meet State Learning Standards. They also measure academic growth from the beginning to the end of the school year and between grade levels.
Instructionally-Targeted Assessments (Acuity) measure how well students have learned information recently taught in class to help teachers plan instructional next steps. They do not predict performance on State Tests.Item Bank Assessments can be created by teachers and given at any time for a variety of purposes (diagnostic, whole class exams, assignments for a targeted group of students). They include a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and short essay questions. Computer Adaptive Assessments (Performance Series) change depending on the answers students give, so they can provide very precise information about individual student's strengths and areas for improvement. They are especially helpful for students performing above or below grade level, including special education students. Schools can give them at any time.English Language Learner Assessments measure student progress in English and Spanish language proficiency.
K-2 Assessments (ECLAS-2, DIBELS, Reading 3D, TCRWP, Fountas and Pinnell, DRA) measure student's beginning reading skills.
