Middle school offers students opportunities to explore their interests, discover new subjects, and learn more about themselves. New York City students can apply to up to 12 middle school programs.
This fall, your child will get a personalized Middle School Application. They are eligible to apply to any of the programs listed on their application.

Explore schools and programs by thinking about what will help you learn and grow—your interests, learning needs, and how you’d get to and from the school. Find a number of places where you think you might be happy. You can apply to up to 12 middle school programs.
Use the tools below to find schools that interest you:
School Search Find your district and learn if you have a zoned school. Students who live in an area that is zoned for a specific school have an Admissions Priority to attend it.
NYC Middle School Directory Learn about applying to middle school and find programs that interest you. Pick up a print copy of your district’s Middle School Directory from your child’s current school, from a Family Welcome Center, or at a Middle School Fair.
You can also go to Middle School Admissions Events and Open Houses to explore your middle school options.
You will get your Middle School Application from your school counselor this fall. The application will list every middle school program you may apply to. Here are a few tips as you complete your application:
Most students get a match from one of the programs ranked on their Middle School Application. Students who do not get matched to one of these programs will get matched to another program listed on the application in either the district where they are zoned for middle school or, when different, the district where they attend public elementary school.
Middle schools across the city were invited to participate in a pilot to increase diversity within their schools for students applying this year to attend for the 2017-2018 school year. The four schools below are participating in the pilot. At these schools, students who receive Free Reduced Lunch (FRL) will receive admissions priority for a certain percentage of the seats in the incoming sixth grade. Yes. Middle School Admissions is the best opportunity to have a voice in where your child attends middle school. Students who are planning on attending their zoned or continuing school should still submit applications.
Speak with your child's school counselor as soon as possible.
Middle schools with a programs that use a Screened, Composite Score, or Screened: Language Admissions Method can see your child’s academic information. They can see the following information for your child’s fourth grade school year:
If you rank your zoned middle school after other middle schools you prefer, you still keep your priority your zoned middle school.
No. Middle School Admissions does not have admissions priorities for siblings. It is not guaranteed that your child applying to fifth grade will be matched to the same middle school that your older child already attends.
No. Middle School Admissions is only used for initial placements into middle schools. You must visit a Family Welcome Center to explore transferring. Please note that you may only request a transfer for specific reasons.
No. Only current New York City residents can participate in Middle School Admissions.
