It is the mission of PS 3 to provide children with an interactive learning environment, one that takes into account the strengths and needs of each individual. We recognize that each child deserves respect, encouragement, and the opportunity for creative self-expression. We encourage children to learn from other children of different ages, abilities and backgrounds. Bias based on race, class, gender or sexuality is actively fought. We support each teacher's creativity and dedication. We work to create an atmosphere of cooperation and clear communication among teachers, administration, students and their families.
Literacy instruction is literature based, with a focus on process writing. Mathematics instruction is grounded both in teaching for understanding and in a recognition of the need for computational fluency. All students receive computer instruction in our newly updated lab. Many curriculum-related field trips put N.Y.C.'s resources to good use.
There is a parent-administered afterschool program daily from 3 to 6 PM. It offers a full range of choices including homework help, sports and arts activities, computer and foreign language instruction. City Lights Youth Theatre is working with the upper grade students.
PS 3 has many N.Y.U. student teachers and tutors from the America Reads/America Counts program, as well as student teachers from Bank Street College. We also receive support from the Greenwich House Music School, Everybody Wins-Power Lunch program, City Sports and Arts via a New Visions for Public Schools grant, Learning Leaders, and Book Pals.
