“To question well,is to teach well.”  Questioning is an instrumental part of instruction.  It fosters imagination, ideas, attitudes, appreciations and most importantly critical thinking skills.  When skillfully phrased and strategically implemented, good questions can turn an ordinary lesson into an elegant work of art. However, poor questioning techniques interferes with the learning process by creating confusion, discouraging students involvement, engagement and inhibiting the free open exchange of ideas and opinions.  Effective questions are purposeful, clear,though provoking and stimulate continuous discourse.  Instead of telling students what to do,teachers should facilitate students’ thinking. 

At Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing and Visual Arts, critical thinking and problem solving is strongly encouraged in all subjects.  As we prepare for the 2013 – 14 school year,the DOE has expanded the Citywide Instructional Expectations.  The effort will involve changes in practices for teachers, school leaders and all students including special education and English language learners.  The goal is to develop quality instruction, while incorporating the Common Core Learning Standards.  All classroom teachers must set high expectation for all students. Teachers must provide opportunities to work with students on critical academic and personal behavior necessary for college and career readiness.  In order for us to prepare our students for the future the following must be mandatory:

·      Students must come to school every day and on time (Seat time in class is mandatory and promotes better grades).

·      Come prepared for every class with notebooks, binders, paper, pens and pencils.

·      Come with a sense of discipline (wearing uniforms and following rules, regulations and routines) and respect for each other, as well as for teachers,administrators, support staff, etc.

·      Stop using profanity, foul language and the “N” word.  It is not a term of endearment. It is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

·      Respect our school by not littering both the inside and outside of the building.  Keep our building, and community clean and presentable.

·      At the end of each week ask yourself the following two questions: 1) What’s the most exceptional thing you’ve done this week? 2) What’s the most exceptional thing you will do next week?


As you begin your school career, I encourage you to establish both educational and extra-curriculum goals.   Get involved in the life of this school, as your cohort makes its mark in the history of the school.  I urge you to continually strive for greatest and build on the foundation you will receive here. 


We are a uniform school and students are expected to be in uniform daily.   The school is centered on the following fourconcepts (R. A. P. L): 

R: respect

Respect yourself, your peers, and all the adults in the building and around you.  Because you will only receive respect when you respect others.

A: accountable

Be accountable for your actions. Only you can truly control your actions. Make sure that if you do something, be prepared to be held accountable for it.  Everyone in life has to make choices and you have to live with these choices.   

P: preparedness

Be prepared for success.  Always have a plan.  A man without a plan is a man without a vision or future.  No one is going to hand you success.  You will have to work for it.  

L: legacy

Always remember what you do today is your legacy for tomorrow.  Your action today is what society will use to judge you tomorrow.  So always consider what kind of legacy you want to leave behind.
