The mission of P.S. 174 is to build a community of diverse learners through varied educational experiences.  Students are taught to their greatest potential through a rigorous academic and enrichment program.  By recognizing and embracing the diverse cultures, nationalities and backgrounds represented in our school, students realize the importance of mutual respect and understanding.  Civic responsibility is developed through service projects that reach out and build up the community.  Parent involvement is a vital part of the school and complements the professional teaching the children receive.

Arts education is important at PS 174. The arts are fully integrated into all subject areas. Students participate in enrichment activities that are both co-curricular and extra-curricular. We have residency programs and relationships with our renowned partners - membership trips and school visits from The New Victory Theater, student residencies with the New York Historical Society, after school activities for parents and students with The Queens Botanical Gardens, community activities with NYC Parks Department, visits from teaching artists from The Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, master-led lessons from Chess NYC, financial literary and The Stock Market Game participation through the Sifma Foundation, and masterful dance lessons, changing the lives of our fifth graders who learn the art of ballroom from Dancing Classrooms.

Our school has received generous grants and gifts from our PS 174 families as well as our Parents Association fundraisers. We haved been granted good and services from Donors Choose, Crayola and NAESP, Disney Musicals in Schools, The New York City Ballet - Nutcracker Project, Target, Exxon Mobil, Uggs, Blueprints for Education- LEGO Community Grant Program, and others.

These grants have not only brought materials, trips, and equipment to our school, but have opened doors to creativity, wonder, excitement, and magic. These grants have given us opportunities to receive not only art supplies such as paints, brushes, paper and clay, but art books, and artist and museum visits too. We have new instruments such as recorders, violins and drums, but also trips to concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Our students are learning technology with additional laptops, cameras and printers, but also the latest with 3-D printers from MakerBot. During the winter months, students have the opportunity to play games and learn chess with lessons and equipment from our generous families.

Our subject areas clusters include STEM (Science * Technology * Engineering * Mathematics) enrichment, movement and health education, visual and performing arts.
P.S. 174 offers a recreational and performing arts programs funded by our Parents Association and offers classes such as chess, arts and crafts, homework help, computer and dance.  P.S. 174 has two cycles of enrichment opportunities during extended day times.
The New York City Learning Leaders program provides many services to our school. Their volunteers tutor students who are learning English, perform vision and hearing screenings, and act as translators between home and school.
