Welcome from new Principal Julie Conason

Dear Families,

By now you've all received the mailing from network leader Vince Brevetti and superintendent Elaine Gorman, letting you know that Barnaby Spring has gone on to another position as principal of East Brooklyn Congregations High School in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and that I am now interim acting principal of Humanities Preparatory Academy.

I haven't been here long, but I can tell you that I already feel very comfortable at Prep.  The teachers here are a wonderful group of educators with whom it's a privilege to work each day; our colleagues in the office are among the most supportive staff members I've met.  I've also had the pleasure of meeting a number of parents, all of whom have impressed me as true advocates not only for their own children, but for the Prep educational community and for educational policy issues in general.

Just as impressive, however, are your children -- our students here at Prep. They demonstrate very clearly their thoughtfulness -- both in the sense of  strong intellectual curiousity and in the sense of caring for others.  They have taken some of the changes that have occurred during this school year with a great deal of resilience as well.  Our students have relied on what is familiar -- teachers and staff members they've known for some time, norms that allow the school to function well and humanely, and the school's core values -- to help them through this  period of transition.  They have had to cope with a lot of changes -- a new floor, a different space, some new staff as well, and a new principal.

They and we are also trying to cope with even more difficult changes -- budget cuts that have diminished our staff and created larger classes.  Even though our classes are still far smaller than those in a traditional public high school, they seem large both to our students and to the staff.  All of us are working to advocate for the changes in local and state government that will help restore funding to public schools.

I'm looking forward to meeting more of the families of Prep, both so that we can discuss the individual needs of students, and so that we can work together as a unified community to further the needs of all students.  You'll soon be receiving a mailing about our first PTA meeting at 6:00 p.m. on the evening of October 15th, which will also be a Parent Appreciation Dinner sponsored by our health and fitness partner, HealthCorps.  I hope to meet you all there.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at school at any time, or email me at julie@humanitiesprep.org

In anticipation of seeing you soon --

Julie Conason
