Frederick Douglass Academy III is an in innovative secondary school based on the doctrines of Dr. Lorraine Monroe. The school is based on the work she did while at the Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) in Harlem, New York. In 1990, after a long career as a teacher, administrator, international consultant, and innovative school leader, Dr. Monroe was given the opportunity to create a school in which she could implement every good practice she had ever used, observed, researched or dreamed up. In 2000, Frederick Douglass Academy III opened its doors as an academy within Intermediate School 219. After four successful years as an academy, FDA III opened in 2004 as a school.
Frederick Douglass Academy III is a college preparatory secondary school dedicated to providing an intensive academic program that will prepare Scholars to enter the higher education institution of their choice. The Learning Community of Frederick Douglass Academy III strives to provide each Scholar with an excellent foundation and a sense of self-confidence.
Frederick Douglass Academy III will build in young women and men the cultural awareness, self-confidence, experience, academic record, skills and access that they will need to prosper in middle school, high school, and beyond. Through discipline, structure, high expectations and exploration, scholars will take personal responsibility for their education and realize their full potential.
