Habits of Mind

At New Day Academy, we attempt to instill in students five Habits of Mind.  Students are expected to think and answer questions such as: How do we know what we know? Whose viewpoint is this from? How does math connect in the real world? Who am I and why should I care? How does math connect in real life? Why does time matter? How can I be an active listener? Why is it important to think and reflect?

The Five Habits of Mind

  • Evidence:  How do we know what we know?
  • Perspective:  Whose viewpoint is this from?
  • Connections:  What is the relationship between events?  What are the causes and effects?
  • Supposition:  What if we changed something in the equation?  How would things change?
  • Relevance:  Why is it important to consider?  Why are we studying this?
