What is the difference between translation and interpretation?
Translation is the rendering of something written from one language to another. Interpretation is the oral rendition of something spoken from one language to another.
Is there a cost for obtaining these services from the Translation & Interpretation Unit?
There is no cost for the services described in the Translation, On-site Interpretation and Over-the-phone Interpretation pages of this site.
I have heard of schools receiving funding specifically to address language access needs. Is this true?
Yes. Schools have received a combination of Title I, Title III and/or tax levy funding to address their local language needs. More information about this funding is available in School Allocation Memorandum #66.
How do I obtain free written translation services from the central Unit?
To obtain free translation services, your document must fall within one of the types of documents processed and you must complete a Translation Request Form (see Key Documents section of this site, at right) and submit it with the document to translations@schools.nyc.gov.
How long does it take to get a translation back?
Turnaround times depend on various factors (e.g., number of languages involved, amount of text to be translated, complexity of language, current workload). Once your request has been assessed, you will be provided with an estimated completion date.
Why does the central Unit only deliver translations in a PDF format?
Translations are delivered in PDF format to avoid font corruption and to protect the integrity of the translation. For documents that require school-specific letterheads or contain form fields, we can incorporate the necessary formatting in the translations to accommodate your needs.
How do I obtain free on-site interpretation services from the central Unit?
To obtain free interpretation services, your event must fall within one of the types of events covered and you must complete an Interpretation Request Form (see Key Documents Section, at right) and submit it to translations@schools.nyc.gov.
What options are available to me if I am looking for on-site interpreters for an event that is not covered by the central Unit?
You may utilize the school funding earmarked for translation and interpretation services to either pay per session costs or to contract with the DOE’s vendor, LIS Translations. More information about this funding is available in School Allocation Memorandum #66
