P.S. 140 Cluster Program
In addition to the literacy, math, social studies, and science curriculums taught in your child’s class, your child may experience two or more of the following cluster programs during the school week. The students attend
these classes while their teacher has a preparation period.
Early Childhood Intervention (Fundations Program)
This program provides students in grades K-2 with strategies for spelling and knowledge of how words work. The program also includes oral language development, vocabulary and comprehension and reading fluency.
Library (Grades Pre-K– 6)
The library program fosters an appreciation of literature and build literacy skills. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of language arts activities. The students will read for pleasure and engage in age appropriate research. It is important for the students to be respectful, follow directions and speak softly while in the library.
Physical Education (Grades 2 – 8)
Our Physical Education program is not just recess. It is a very structured health-related physical education curriculum that promotes lifelong fitness as well as team sports and cooperative education. All students are expected to be prepared with sneakers and engaged in all activities. Our goal is to promote healthy choices and physical activity for all of our students.
Performing Arts (Grades Pre-K – 8)
In Performing Arts students will get an overview of drama and dance skills. Students will be using their imaginations to learn the importance of acting and movement.
In class they will be doing physical and vocal exercises followed by activities that will teach them how to move and act. Throughout the year the students will be working together to present performances in their classes.
Science (Grades 3 – 5)
The Department of Education has mandated the following changes for the science curriculum this year. All students in grades 3 – 5 will receive 150 minutes of science per week. These requirements will be fulfilled in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
Music (Grades Pre-K – 6)
Music is one of the many things people do for enjoyment. Since most of the students often engage in listening to music, the lessons during music will focus on the development of performing skills. The goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to perform both in the classroom and on stage. Students will also be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles and genres. Students in the lower grades will become familiar with music through the game-like music education approach created by musician, Carl Orff. Students in the upper grades will learn how to play the recorder.
