HMHS students may choose to participate in a variety of after school programs and services. The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the school's affiliated community-based organization, offers after school programs in the arts, music, socialization, health, and counseling, among others. HMI is committed to serving and providing extra support services and resources to all students who are in danger of dropping out of high school and has a long history of working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. In addition, HMHS students may take college-level classes through the New York University College Preview Program, may participate in the American Museum of Natural History's after school science program, Cooper Union's Saturday arts program, and New York University's High School Law Program, and may be paired with mentors from companies including Pfizer and J.P. Morgan Chase through the New York City Mentoring program. Studio in a School provides arts instruction to HMHS students during the school day, and additional enrichment opportunities are available to HMHS students through the Theater Development Fund: Stage Door and the Manhattan Theatre Club.
