Mathematics

PS 54 is committed to math-literate students. Our teachers use everyday experiences and hands-on activities, coupled with mathematical concepts — measurement, geometry, algebra, fractions and whole numbers and data — to promote and encourage math knowledge.

Teachers provide students with learning strategies that give them a way to think through and plan the solution to a math problem.  This allows them to become more effective and independent learners.  Students are also encouraged to talk their way through each problem, either alone or with peers. This permits them to gain an understanding of the “why” of basic facts and concepts.

We use games and group projects as creative tools to help deepen students’ understanding of math concepts, increase their ability to manipulate numbers to discover relationships and improve and enhance their basic skills.
