The  English Language Learners Program at P.S. 506

P.S. 506 provides instruction to English Language Learners through a free-standing English as a Second Language Program.  The program includes self-contained classes, pull-out, and push-in models.  The language of instruction in all classes is English. Teachers develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English through a variety of ESL methodologies. They  include the use of visuals, frequent repetition, use of graphic organizers, guided instruction, and vocabulary development.

Our program’s goal is to facilitate language acquisition and attain English proficiency, as measured by the NYSESLAT assessment and meeting the Common Core Standards. ESL methodologies are infused throughout the curriculum to enrich academic language and foster social vocabulary.  We provide a nurturing environment, accommodating the needs of students’ different levels of ability with ample opportunities for all students to achieve academic success.

At P.S. 506, we focus on enhancing students’ strengths, accommodating individual learning styles, and appreciating the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our student population.
