P.S. 506's Mathematics Program

As part of our math instruction, our school uses the Everyday Math Program in all grades.  The Everyday Math Program is a spiraled curriculum that scaffolds instruction.  This program is aligned with the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, as well as, the N.Y.S. Standards.   Math instruction is delivered to our students through the "Workshop Model".  All lessons that are taught are visual, hands-on and differentiated in order to meet the needs of every child.  Students are given the opportunity to work individually, as well as, collaboratively with partners and in small groups.  Students are assessed informally on a daily basis. They are  administered formal exams at the end of each unit so that teachers can plan future lessons and create small groups based on needs.

We also use math exemplars as a teaching tool to assess problem solving and communication skills.  Our student mathematicians use a math plan to assist them in solving problems and writing out their “thinking” about the required math task. The Math Toolkit of Strategies, reminds our students of the many ways they can solve a problem. Students are given every opportunity to relate math to real-life experiences.  Students also incorporate math into other content areas such as science, social studies and reading.

The “Math Problem of the Week” is an extra activity which challenges students to solve the math problem and receive a score of “4”. This challenge allows students to accumulate purple tickets for every correct answer. We also have a Saturday Math Academy in order to increase proficiency in mathematics.  We are in the process of starting a Math Club as well.

Our math program is built on high expectations and academic rigor on the part of all our students!
