Cavallaro Memorial Fund for the FDNY & NYPD
The students of Cavallaro are honoring the tragic deaths of firefighters Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia by collecting funds to plant a tree in their memory. We are working in conjunction with Susan Gooberman of NYC Department of Parks. Ms. Gooberman is in charge of NYC "Going Green" to help the environment. She is delighted to see how Cavallaro students are interested in this new citywide movement as well as taking action to never forget the way the FDNY and NYPD put their lives on the line everyday, (especially after 9/11).
Cavallaro has also adopted Ladder 5 Engine 24 on Houston St. in Manhattan. Several classes have already written letters and we will do something on the 18th of every month to honor the lives of Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia. We would like to thank Linda Mollo-Holmes, Joy Simoes, Kim Viglione, Anna Maria Comuniello, Lorraine Biondo and Theresa Cardazone for their efforts in remembering Joseph and Robert and all of the other members of the FDNY and NYPD who have given their lives to protect others.
UPDATE 11/27/07
The Cavallaro "Fallen Heroes Memorial" fund drive for the FDNY and NYPD was a huge success. We raised money to help plant a tree to forever remember and pay tribute to those who put their lives on the line everyday and give the most courageous contribution of all. The mayor's office in charge of the tree planting has informed us our tree will be planted near Ladder 5 Engine 24 on Houston Street in the city. The day of the dedication and actual planting - by our students from the fund raiser, will be March 20th, 2008 - most appropriately - the first day of Spring, a time of rebirth, hope and joy!
Firefighters from Ladder 5 Engine 24 also recently visited Cavallaro on Friday, November 16th. They spoke to our students about fire safety and our students had a presentation for them. The students presented them with several gifts including a quilt that was made by our students. The choir also sung a song that was dedicated to the firemen as a short movie that was created for FDNY played. It was a special day for all involved and the students were especially grateful to the firefighters who took time out of their schedules to visit them.
UPDATE 2/5/08
Cavallaro students along with Mrs. Viglione, Ms. Simoes, Mrs. Comuniello and Mrs. Holmes celebrated January with a Giants Super Bowl Basket for the firemen of Ladder 5 Engine 24. This is Cavallaro's 5th month of Adoption of the firehouse in Memory of Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia.
The Super Bowl Basket of chips, dips and football paper goods also included 50 FREE haircuts donated from Pier Luca Salon of 13th ave. for each of the firemen. This month when we celebrate Valentine's Day, we will show our love for the firemen of Ladder 5 Engine 24. Many thanks to all involved.
UPDATE 4/30/08
March was "Bed and Breakfast" for Ladder 5 Engine 24. 12 Brand new pillows and 2 baskets of breakfast food was deliveried to the Firehouse for the month of March. April is Spring Cleaning for the Firehouse. Cleaning products are to be collected by the sixth graders from 4/10 to 4/18. Class 603 will visit the firehouse on April 29 after the vacation. Special thanks to Mrs. Viglione, Ms.Simoes and Mrs. Holmes
