Dear Parents:

We have carefully planned for the safety and security of our children and all members of the P.S. 26 family. We have carefully reviewed the school safety plan which includes well-thought out procedures in case of an emergency such as fire, bomb threats, etc. If we need to evacuate our school we would escort the children to one of three evacuation sites.

x P.S. 4 / P.S. 179 is the primary site for evacuation. If necessary, we would relocate all students to this building first.
o P.S. 4/P.S. 179
o 136-35 Peck Avenue
o Flushing, N.Y. 11365
o 718-264-0916
o Ms. Burnett, Principal

x M.S. 216 is our alternate site. If P.S. 216 is not available we would then relocate all students to P.S. 178.
o M.S. 216
o 64-20 175th Street
o Fresh Meadows, N.Y.
o 718-358-2070
o Janice Imundi, Principal

x If for some reason, both P.S. 4 and M.S. 216 are not available for us, all students would relocate to P.S. 178.
o P.S. 178
o 189-10 Radnor Road
o Jamaica, N.Y. 11423
o 718-474-5763

The information will be posted on the school doors and parents could sign their children out when they reach the site. For security reasons we cannot release the children while they are enroute to the site. Rest assured that no matter what we need to do in order to keep the children safe, we will act in a manner which is calm and well-thought out.

Please help us by discussing safety procedures such as fire drills, shelter drills, evacuations, and lockdowns with your children. A lockdown is defined as a situation whereby nobody is permitted to leave or enter the building. The determination to proceed with a lockdown situation is made by the New York City Police Department. Our staff will also discuss safety with the children. Also, we are preparing for a lockdown should this situation occur. The PTA has purchased bottles of water, flashlights, and walkie-talkies.

Beyond emergency situations, we must focus on day- to- day safety. In the morning, please bring your child to school before 8:20 a.m. Children who attend pre-k should enter through the front doors at 8:15 a.m. If you arrive after 8:20 a.m. please keep right as you enter and wait for all of the classes to go to their rooms. Students (k-5) who arrive late should enter through the front doors and keep to the left side. No one will be allowed to enter the lobby until all of the classes have gone to their rooms.

If you must go to the office, please sign in and go directly to the office. The best time to go to the office is after 8:45 a.m. and before 2:45 p.m. You must have photo I.D. or you will not be allowed past the security guard.

Also, I must remind you that double parking and making u-turns in front of the building is illegal and dangerous. Please refrain from these acts.

Please constantly update your phone numbers. If your number changes, the school must be notified.

Thank you for helping us to maintain a safe and secure environment for all of our children. You may also access the Dept. of Education website at http://www.nycenet.edu/ for information about safety and security. It also has suggestions about how to discuss the world situation with your child. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dina Koski
