Application to be made starting January 1 prior to the academic year you plan
on attending college for financial aid from the federal government.
.TAP ( Tuition Assistance Program ) www.tapweb.org
Application used to apply for financial aid from New York State, the link to be
clicked on with confirmation of FAFSA application.
You will know what financial aid you are eligible for by filing these free
Applications.
SEVEN STEPS TO APPLICATION FOR FINANCIAL AID
1. COLLECT ALL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO APPLY – Income tax returns,
Social Security number, W-2 forms) and any other records of income and assets.
If you are 24 years old, your parents’ information will probably be required too.
If you have not completed tax information at time of applying for financial aid,
estimate your tax information and correct the information later.
2. GET A FEDERAL STUDENT AID PIN ( PERSONAL IDENIFICATION
NUMBER) AT www.pin.ed.gov
Your PIN permits you to sign your FAFSA electronically, make corrections
To your FAFSA application once it is filed and accesses your application online.
If you are under 24 years old, you and one of your parents will each need a PIN?
3. COMPLETE THE FAFSA AT www.fafsa.ed.gov
Apply starting January 1 prior to the academic year you plan on attending college.
You can apply for financial aid before you have been admitted to a college/
University. Internet access is the advised manner to apply; however, a paper
FAFSA is available by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at
1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).
4. LINK TO TAP ON THE INTERNET FROM YOUR FAFSA APPLICATION
The TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM ( TAP ) is available for New York
Residents Only. Once you have completed your FAFSA application online you will
Get to the “FAFSA on the Web confirmation page.” Click on the link for the New
York State residents, and you will be directed to the New York State Higher
Education Services Corporation (HESC) website in order to fill out your TAP
Application.
5. RECEIVE A STUDENT AID REPORT ( SAR )
After your FAFSA is processed, you will be emailed a STUDENT AID REPORT
that contains the information you provided on your FAFSA and a calculation of
your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the United States Department of
Education within 3-5 days. Use your PIN to access your SAR and to make
Corrections, if necessary, at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
6. VERIFY YOUR DATA
You may be asked for verification of the information that you have given. Be pre-
pared with data to substantiate the information given in your application for
financial aid.
7. RECEIVE YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD LETTER
With completion of your FAFSA application in which you have demonstrated
financial need, your selected college will send you an award letter indicating
the financial aid programs for which you qualify.
