Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS has been successfully implemented in classes at six P993Q sites (P41, MS72, P130, P191, P208, and Long Island City H.S.)  It is a system that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments.  A continuum of positive behavior support for all students within the school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as hallways, restrooms).  Attention is focused on creating and sustaining school-wide, classroom, and individual systems of support that improve school behavior.  Our students respond positively to rewards which can be hourly, daily, and/or weekly, depending upon individual needs.

 Brain Gym

Brain Gym is part of an initiative to introduce the therapeutic classroom experience to all P993Q students.  It is a program of physical movements that enhance learning and performance in all areas. Brain Gym includes 26 easy and enjoyable targeted activities that integrate body and mind to bring about rapid and often dramatic improvements in: concentration, memory, reading, writing, organizing, listening, physical coordination, and more.

Getting Ready to Learn

P993Q is participating in the “Getting Ready to Learn” program which is a new District 75 initiative.  This program is designed to organize and prepare students to learn through a daily, classroom-based movement curriculum.  Specific exercises are designed to improve alertness, orient students to themselves and the environment, organize responses, focus attention, improved behavior, and enhance learning.
