The Social Studies Curriculum helps students in all grades to make sense of the world in which they live. In grades K-2 students learn about themselves, their families, school and neighborhood. They recognize the importance of families and how they influence who we are. They discuss what it means to be good citizens. They recognize communities as people living, working, playing and sharing ideas together. They identify community helpers and how the community meets our needs (food, clothing, shelter). In the upper grades the students focus on important features of communities throughout the world. They discover how culture, history, geography, people and government shape the development of a community. In all grades, map skills and geography are taught. Students gain experience using maps and globes and learn cardinal and intermediate directions.
