College Discovery
Our Mission
The mission of Port Richmond High School is to provide all of our students with individualized challenges, opportunities, and resources, to become lifelong learners and productive, responsible citizens. The vision of the school community is to establish a learning environment that is welcoming to students and their family members throughout the school day as well as after-school. This vision will be achieved through the establishment of smaller learning communities within the large school structure that provides opportunities for students to experience personal interaction in both academic and social situations. All students can learn and achieve at a high level of expectation given a challenging and engaging curriculum as well as proper attention to their individual needs. |
It is the policy of the Department of Education of the City of New York not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or sex in its educational programs, activities and employment policies, and to maintain an environment free of sexual harassment, as required by law. The College Discovery
What is the College Discovery Program?
The College Discovery program is an academic college preparatory program designed to help students develop their fullest academic and personal potential.
How do I know if College Discovery is right for my child?
If your child has an overall average of 80%, is diligent, motivated to learn and you feel strongly they can excel given the proper encouragement then CD is the place to be.
How does College Discovery differ from an “Honors” program?
In College Discovery we recognize that not all students can handle the stress and rigors of a full honors program. This does not mean that CD students are not challenged to live up to their fullest academic potential. CD students are strongly encouraged to take Honors level courses as well as Advanced Placement courses, particularly in academic areas where they show interest and success.
What are some other advantages to College Discovery?
In major subject areas CD students are in “self-contained classes”, this means all their classmates are CD students. The class is achieving at or about the same academic level, there are less discipline problems and the classroom teacher knows they can challenge the students and push them to a higher academic level.
CD students have more flexibility in their program and are able to participate in some of the specialized classes Port Richmond has to offer, such as, Drama, TV/Video production, Photo, Sculpture, Catering, JROTC, Travel and Tourism and Virtual Enterprise.
What are some of the expectations of a College Discovery student?
CD students must maintain at least 78% overall average. Are strongly recommended to take 3 years of a foreign language, 4 years of math and should take Honors or Advanced Placement courses, participate in specialized classes and are encouraged to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Our goal is to develop a “well-rounded” student with a variety of education experiences.
